MTNL TriBand
Yesterday "MTNL Triband", the broadband internet service offered by MTNL was setup at my home. 15 days after submitting the application and after one reminder, the technician was at my home. He set up the ADSL router. I suspect he did not have good technical knowledge since he couldn't find how to setup TCP/IP on my Windows XP. But then contacted his helpdesk and managed to install it using USB port instead of using the LAN card. Since I was at office while all this was happening, when I got back home everything was setup fine and working correctly.
I must say I am impressed by the speed I am getting. The first thing I did was to download the latest firefox browser and its 3 extensions I used most of the times (AdBlock, Session Saver, Nuke Anything). I got an impressive download speed of 25KBps. Since the advertised speed is 256 kbps, I think this is the best I can get. I hope I continue to get this speed. All the sites, including the "slower" ones like icicidirect or icicibank were loading fully within 4-5 seconds. Later when the pages were cached, the loading time was even lesser. I had opted for plan 399 where I pay Rs 399 monthly and get 256 kbps connection. First 400MB downloads are free while for each 1MB extra Rs 2/- will be charged. Depending on my usage pattern, I can opt to upgrade to higher limit packages.
Unfortunately my PC is still not "fit". It reboots at random times. The Linux does not even boot up. This is the same Motherboard problem which I was facing earlier. I need to get it repaired once again. Since I cannot surf from Linux, my first task now would be to install a decent Firewall to protect my PC from the intruders. Even when I am not surfing the PC gets hooked on to the Internet as soon as I boot it up. Any recommendations for a good Windows based firewall?
